This Biggest Loser's No Mo

On tonight's finale of The Biggest Loser (8 pm/ET, NBC), a large part of the show will be missing, since good-natured Maurice "Mo" Walker was voted off last week. While the 30-year-old travel agent won over his housemates and Loser fans with his Tennessean charm, we're still left wondering: Why didn't the big guy — who started the contest at 430 pounds and lost 56 — shed as much fat as his skinnier rivals, like Ryan, who's already lost 90 pounds? Here, TV Guide Online phones our favorite Loser for Mo info.

TVGO: You've definitely emerged as the most popular contestant. How does that feel?
Mo:
I wouldn't say I am the most popular, but it is wonderful how everything is going. I love talking to people and I love giving people motivation.

TVGO: Is that why you did this show?
Mo:
Here's the story on that. Probably about two months before the show started, I had gone to the doctor and had a physical. He told me that if I didn't change my ways and lose weight, it would be possible that I wouldn't be here in five years. That was a total wake-up call. So when the opportunity to do the show came about, I was like, "I have to do this."

TVGO: Any housemates you didn't get along with?
Mo:
I could pretty much tolerate everyone. Lisa... she really rubbed a couple of people the wrong way, but she is just misunderstood. Everybody had their good points — some people just had more bad points than others.

TVGO: Any hard feelings toward Gary for voting you off?
Mo:
No! Gary is a great guy, he's a family man and since Day 1, we had an alliance and we just looked out for each other. I'm sure he had his own reasons for [his vote,] and I hold nothing against him.

TVGO: Why do you think Ryan shed more pounds than you, even though he was smaller to begin with?
Mo:
I am so happy you asked me that question. Ryan was at almost the perfect weight; he weighed enough to drop weight quickly, but he didn't weigh too much, so that he would have limitations in his physical activity. So when I first started, there were several things that I was just physically not able to do. After a workout, my body would be so exhausted that I would basically have to just rest until the next workout. Ryan was 330 lbs. when he started, so he was able to continue and push himself all the way through those first couple of weeks when I was having trouble.

TVGO: So you weren't cheating on your diet?
Mo:
I was not eating enough food, that is what the kicker was. Bob [the trainer] toward the end actually increased my food intake. He said that you definitely have to eat to lose weight or your body will go into starvation mode, and I think that was what was going on with me for a couple of weeks.

TVGO: Some viewers thought you might've been snacking on the side.
Mo:
I would never, ever be given this opportunity and then ruin it by cheating. That wasn't even an option. There were so many people that were turned down for the show, and I would feel just terrible to know that these other people could be here [instead]. So no, I wasn't cheatin'!

TVGO: Are you still losing weight?
Mo:
I am averaging about three to four pounds a week. I feel excellent and my energy level is terrific. Of course, I want some of those 10- or 12-pound weight-loss weeks that we had on the ranch, but slow and steady is good. On the show, [I lost] 56 and now I've lost an additional 27 pounds. I've passed that 80-pound mark and I'm trying to get there.

TVGO: Have you been tempted by your favorite, fried chicken?
Mo:
No fried chicken. I do the baked chicken now.

TVGO: Do people recognize you on the street?
Mo:
Oh gosh, do they. Right now, I'm like a trainer, I'm a nutritionist and a motivational speaker. People come up to me and say, "Maurice, what do I need to do on the treadmill?" And I'm sharing the advice that I was given. People will come up to me in a restaurant and ask what to eat. I'm telling them how to change their diet. So that has been really cool, to affect a lot of people's lives.

TVGO: Sounds like you enjoyed your experience.
Mo:
Oh yeah, I'd do it again.

TVGO: Maybe you could replace Caroline Rhea as the host!
Mo:
That would be a wonderful idea. Even better, maybe I could be on the next find-a-wife sort of program.

TVGO: You aren't getting more dates now?
Mo:
[Laughs] Oh gosh, I'm already getting ex-girlfriends calling me.

Mrs. Etheridge Is Committed

Popular grad Tammy Lynn Michaels (aka Mrs. Melissa Etheridge) is baaaack. An habitué of portraying wily, wacky women, she currently plays Tess, the shady nanny on NBC's new Tuesday-night comedy, Committed (9:30 pm/ET). She also has a recurring role as Lacey, a loopy but lovable lesbian on Showtime's The L Word (Season 2 begins Feb. 20). Here, the mouthy 30-year-old starlet candidly discusses her gigs as an actress, stepmom and rock star's missus. Buckle your seat belts, folks...

TV Guide Online: Just curious. Do you mind being called "Mrs. Melissa Etheridge"?
Tammy Lynn Michaels:
Are you kidding me? I took the name Etheridge. In my career, it's Tammy Lynn Michaels. Around home, I'm Tammy Etheridge.

TVGO: Did you change it legally? Visiting the DMV to update your driver's license must've been fun.
Michaels:
Yeah, especially when the f---in' government doesn't even recognize the reason why you're changing your name. That's even more fun. But I'm flattered when people call me Mrs. Of course they can call me Mrs. Etheridge. I'm so flattered, it makes me want to cry! That's an acknowledgment of my relationship to Melissa. Thank you very much. And if they continue subtly [saying that], maybe those flyover states will learn a lesson.

TVGO: OK, so then it's safe to call you Mrs. Melissa Etheridge in our article.
Michaels:
It's fine. Some people bank on the importance of whom they're married to and others don't like being called Mr. or Mrs. So-and-so. I don't give a s---. And you know what? I think there's a lot of people who recognize me because of being Mrs. Melissa Etheridge and, fine, let that get 'em to the show!

TVGO: As one of Hollywood's few out actresses, how hard has it been for you to find work?
Michaels:
I'd probably have a better measure of how my coming out affected my career if I had continued to pursue it as aggressively as I had been. When I was finishing Popular, I went through a period of time — even before I met Melissa — of questioning if I really wanted to keep acting. Then I met Melissa, came out, the fur started flyin' and I just ducked [out of sight]. I knew that any role I booked at that time — whether it was because of my talent or I'd slept with the casting director — people would say I was just riding Melissa's coattails. I didn't want that, so I stopped auditioning and started making lunches for my stepkids and went along on tour with Melissa.

TVGO: What lured you back to work?
Michaels:
Fortunately, I have a great agent who did not listen to me when I told her I wanted to take a year off. She sent me the script to The L Word and I laughed out loud — which never happens — and Melissa very sweetly drove me to the audition. I booked the show and things have been in full swing ever since.

TVGO: What's the status of Melissa's sitcom? Would you ever guest-star?
Michaels:
They made the development deal and a week later, she was diagnosed with cancer! She's done with her chemotherapy now and she'll be getting back on her feet in a couple of weeks, and then they'll just pick up production again. Melissa and I have made jokes about [my guesting], but it's gone no further than late-night-TV-watching jokes in bed. I wouldn't mark it off my list; I'd do anything with Melissa. Who knows, she could have a dream in her new TV show where I come sliding down a fireman's pole!

TVGO: You play so many off-kilter characters. What does that say about you?
Michaels:
I am off-kilter! I was raised by so many colorful souls, and I've just got pieces of all of them in me.

Ashanti's Oz Preview

For her feature-film debut in Coach Carter (opening Friday), R&B idol Ashanti got to work with both Samuel L. Jackson and Finding Forrester star Rob Brown. But her preferred leading man is the one she shares the screen with in her next movie, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. "I'd have to say that Pepe the Shrimp is my favorite costar," the 24-year-old fledgling actress laughs. "He had a wonderful personality."

In case you're confused, no, Pepe is definitely not playing Ashanti's love interest in the made-for-TV movie, which is set to air in May on ABC. Instead, the hyperactive shellfish plays Toto to his leading lady's Dorothy. Naturally, he's not the only familiar Muppet face who turns up in Oz. Gonzo appears as the Tin Man (or the Tin Thing, as he's called in the film), Fozzie is the Cowardly Lion and everyone's favorite green thespian, Kermit, takes on the role of the Scarecrow.

As for Miss Piggy, she steals the show (naturally) in a quartet of roles as the Wicked Witches of the East and West and the Good Witches of the North and South.

According to Ashanti, the film's story line more or less follows the 1939 classic, albeit with a few noticeable differences. "Dorothy wants to get out of Kansas to become a singer," she explains. "The Muppets have this contest kind of like American Idol and she gets the chance to go sing for them, but the bus leaves her behind." After that, Dorothy is magically transported to the Land of Oz where she follows the Yellow Brick Road to the Wizard, who she hopes will make her a star.

Along the way she encounters a few surprise guest stars, including Queen Latifah, David Alan Grier, Kelly Osbourne and, most intriguingly, Quentin Tarantino.

As a longtime Muppet fan, Ashanti says working with the Jim Henson Company was a dream come true. "Growing up, my favorite show was Fraggle Rock. I used to cry when the show ended. So it was a wonderful feeling to be up there with the Henson guys, because some of them that do the characters for the Muppets also performed the characters for Fraggle Rock. The puppets all had their own personalities and facial expressions. After a while, you forgot you were talking to someone's hand!"
